Introducing the Sugar Grove Community Development Association (SGCDA)

Throughout the winter months, a new community group was formed—the Sugar Grove Community Development Association (SGCDA). This organization builds upon the efforts of past initiatives, such as the Sugar Grove Streetscape project, which saw the revitalization of several downtown building facades.

Why Form the SGCDA?

The goal of this group is to work closely with the Sugar Grove Borough Council (SGBC) to improve our community. By having this separate structure, we gain two key advantages:

  1. Access to community grants that municipalities cannot apply for directly.
  1. Greater community involvement, allowing more residents to take part in local projects.

How Was the SGCDA Formed?

The association is composed of community members who expressed interest at SGBC meetings, along with three SGBC representatives. The group is working with Warren Worx and the Community Foundation of Warren to finalize its by-laws, which will soon be published for public review.

Financing SGCDA projects

As part of the Sugar Grove Community Development Association (SGCDA), and in collaboration with the Community Foundation of Warren County (CFWC), SGCDA has created the “Sugar Grove Community Fund” (SGCF). The SGCF exists as a component fund under the CFWC and will benefit from the CFWC’s 501 (c) 3 tax-exempt status. All donations to the SGCF will be for the exclusive benefit of non-profit organizations in Sugar Grove borough.

This new fund will operate under the same principles as the Community Foundation of Warren County. That is to say that in its initial stages, the SGCF will seek to grow its principal market value to a level that it will generate sufficient interest so that interest only will be distributed, and the principal will be left untouched to grow.

SGCDA is already impacting Sugar Grove borough through several complete and ongoing projects.

Cherry Hill Cemetery

Last year, the Cherry Hill Cemetery reverted to SGBC authority. Significant cleanup efforts were made, including standing up gravestones and maintaining the grounds with a professional mowing service. The mowing contract has been renewed for the 2025 season. A work bee will be scheduled once the weather allows for equipment access without surface damage. Special thanks to the Daughter’s of the American Revolution for their generous donation of a flag and pole—an impressive sight as you approach town!

Sugar Grove Little League Dugout Project

The dugout project is nearly complete, with only the roof left to finish. Winter delayed the final steps, but they will be completed soon. After the Little League season, the county’s Little League Association has agreed to provide materials for resurfacing the large field. Additionally, plans are in motion to level the small field.

Sugar Grove Playground Improvements

The playground is set for a two-phase improvement plan:

  • Phase 1: A work bee is scheduled for April 16 at 5:00 PM (rain date: April 17 at 5:00 PM) to remove old bark and replace it with fresh material. Thank you to Briggs Transportation for their generous contribution of bark and trucking services! The SGBC has allocated $2,500 for SGCDA to repair and replace damaged existing equipment. All are encouraged to attend the work bee.
  • Phase 2: The SGCDA is developing a long-term plan to replace playground equipment and is actively seeking grant funding. This is expected to be a two-year project.

Borough Park Starlink (Hot Spot) Installation

Thanks to a grant secured through Warren Worx, a Starlink system will be installed in the park next to the medical center, providing free internet access in the borough center. The grant covers equipment and a three-year subscription. Installation is expected in the coming months. Additionally, the grant includes $1,000 for a community event—ideas and suggestions can be submitted to the SGBC office.

Pickleball Court Project

The SGCDA is launching a new initiative to install pickleball courts in the town playground park. This project aims to bring an exciting, fast-growing sport to the community, providing a recreational opportunity for all ages. The plan includes identifying suitable court locations, securing funding, and working with local officials to bring this project to life. Updates will be shared as progress is made.

We are excited about the progress being made in Sugar Grove and look forward to continued community involvement in these projects. We hope you will donate to the future of Sugar Grove with a donation through Warren Gives.
