Mission:
We are mothers, stepmothers, grandmothers, foster mothers, and female legal guardians who have children serving in the military, guard, or reserves, or children who are veterans. We support each other and our children while promoting patriotism. Our organization focuses on our mission every single day and will never, ever, forsake our troops, our veterans, or the families of our Fallen Heroes.
About Us and Our Critical Needs:
On January 22, 1942, a group of mothers of servicemen joined together to create the Blue Star Mothers organization. In June of 1960, the organization was chartered by Congress. We are mothers, stepmothers, grandmothers, foster mothers, and female legal guardians who have children serving in the military, guard, or reserves, or children who are veterans. Blue Star Mothers of Kinzua, PA203 was founded in 2019, and we have worked to not only develop the organization, but also to make ourselves known in the community through our service and commitment to support Active- Duty Military, Reservists, and Veterans of Warren County.
Our organization not only provides support for active-duty service personnel and reservists, but we also promote patriotism, we listen to and assist our veterans, and are available to assist in homeland volunteer efforts to help our country remain strong. We are a small organization, but have been able to accomplish some big endeavors. The projects listed below are critical needs. Now more than ever, our support is needed for Warren County as we navigate these tension- filled times with our military members and their families.
Blue Star Mothers of Kinzua has grown a great deal in the services and efforts we provide for Warren County. We serve and support our military from enlistment through the end of their lives.
As we have grown, we now have projects that cover our newly enlisted high school seniors from all Warren County Schools, starting with our Graduation Ceremony that is held each year, where we recognize each enlistee and their families. This year’s event will be held on May 16th. Local and state dignitaries attend and speak as well.
We follow this by sending care packages to our currently serving men and women while providing support to their families as needed or requested. Items for the packing come from donations, and we purchase some items as well. We also pay for the postage for each box sent, which totals over $10 per box.
We started and continue with the recognition of those who serve both current and past, with our Hometown Heroes Banners project that you see along Pennsylvania Avenue.
Warren County has the highest per capita number of Veterans of any county in the State of Pennsylvania, so we support our Veterans once they separate from active duty by holding events to thank them for their service and show our appreciation for rising to protect and serve our country. We do this in many ways. We have Military Appreciation Night each year at both Warren Area High School/War Memorial Field and at Eisenhower during the football season. We have a highly active nursing home program where our Blue Star Mothers go into the nursing homes and bring needed items, have pizza parties, play games, and take time to visit and listen one-on-one to Veterans residing in the nursing homes. We participate in the Warren 4th of July Parade, and this year, we will be coordinating a Veterans Day Parade. We held a Christmas in July event for Veterans and their guest last year that was exceptionally well-received, and have another scheduled this year on July 18th, all at no cost to the Veterans and guests. We have added additional Veteran events this year. On May 2nd, we will be taking a bus trip to the 9/11 Flight 93 National Memorial and will visit surrounding memorials with our Veterans and guests at no charge, and will include their meal. We are planning a fishing charter on Lake Erie for Veterans during the summer.
We also recognize and remember those veterans who served previously and have passed on, through our extremely popular Wreaths Across America Program. We cover over seven cemeteries, with the number growing each year. In this way, we honor the fallen during their service and those who have passed, by thanking each of them during the wreath laying ceremony.
Lastly, we respond to ongoing needs that are brought to our attention as we are able, to support Warren County, those serving or that have served along with their loving families, and fulfill our mission.
